Ruby is a very smart and very sweet red-and-white hound. Ruby is around 5 years old. She is spayed, current on all her shots, healthy and under excellent veterinary care. Ruby is completely house trained — she has never had an “accident” inside the house. She is very relaxed inside a crate. She loves walks and smells. She rides very well in a car.

Being a typical hound, Ruby is quite food motivated. She loves freeze dried chicken and liver treats, cream cheese, American cheese, deli meat and turkey flavored kibble. She takes her daily medications wrapped in American Cheese. She enjoys “hunting” frozen Kongs hidden inside boxes and crushed paper. Ruby knows some basic commands — Sit, down, crate time, mat and touch. She is working on stay. She still needs a lure to follow commands but she picks up on new tricks very very quickly.

Ruby is a medium sized 40 lbs Running Walker Foxhound, a sub-breed of American Foxhounds. We know little about her history, unfortunately. Our best guess is she was raised as an outside-only dog in rural Florida, probably kept in a kennel with other hunting dogs. She did not know any obedience commands when her current family adopted her from the shelter.

Ruby can be quite energetic early in the mornings and late in afternoons. Because of this she will do very well with an active family who likes to walk, run or play in the mornings and evenings. She will need a large backyard with a minimum 6 foot tall fence. Ruby being smart is an escape artist. She is a jumper, not a digger. If you have knowledge of hunting dogs and have experience training hounds then your home will be a great fit for Ruby. Ruby might do well in a house with children or other well-mannered dogs or both. Ruby is submissive and prefers to stay away from overly energetic, aggressive, or dominant dogs.

Ruby will flop over and offer her belly for rubs. However, she is not overly cuddly and prefers to sleep in her own space. If you are looking for a snuggle-buddy then Ruby may not be the right friend for you.
